The only thing you need to do is visit Instagram if you’d like to witness a unique, magical unicorn; however, you won’t find a horse there with a single horn; rather, you’ll find a golden retriever puppy with a single ear. Rae’s remarkable appearance earned her the Instagram nickname @GoldenUnicornRae. Rae’s owner, Brianna Vorhees, claims that immediately after delivery, the puppy’s mother unintentionally severed Rae’s left ear while attempting to rip Rae’s amniotic sac.

Rae was transported to Family Friends Veterinary Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to receive medical attention for the wounds that her dog’s mom unintentionally gave her. The puppy’s left half of her face and neck, starting at the top of her head, required stitching. The mother dog’s owners decided to turn over the puppy to the veterinary clinic. This is how Vorhees, the vet clinic’s receptionist, got the chance to adopt Rae and raise the young puppy under her care.

The critically ill 2-day-old dog was given round-the-clock care by Vorhees, including routine bottle feedings. After six weeks, when everything had healed, Rae’s owner said, “she started growing.” At that point, her remaining ear began moving upwards, and she almost appeared to be getting a facelift.

When asked by PEOPLE if Rae can still hear, Vorhees said yes, claiming that Rae still reacts to her name and verbal instructions even though the ear doesn’t line up with her ear canal. Everybody is curious about how that one ear functions given how far away it is from the canal, but Vorhees continued, “We simply know that it works.

Rae is the funniest person I know. Vorhees said the active puppy owns every room she comes into and has never been insecure. No matter how small she was, she never showed fear and always acted as though she was in command. Rae was first in and out of health, but she is now in good spirits and has made Vorhees happy since their first day together.
