Before being saved by a guy who wouldn’t give up on her, an abandoned dog spent fifteen months living on her own close to the small community of Ducor, California. She spent the day prowling the fields like a savage and the night sleeping beneath solar panels. She was fed by passersby who stopped to help. Even animal control was unable to capture her, despite the efforts of the people.
She lived alone week after week until a very special person entered her life and irrevocably altered it. Danny Spanks from A Safefurr Place Animal Rescue went by that moniker. When he learned about her circumstances, he determined to assist. Early in December, he had his first encounter with her. Thank goodness, it wasn’t too chilly. She fled as soon as she saw him when he spotted her, hiding behind the gate of a solar panel enclosure, but that didn’t stop him.
He visited her every day and started calling her Mama. But every time he came near, she took off. He chose to construct her a shelter and feeding station out of a mound of trash, a mattress, and box springs that he discovered nearby to win her trust. They would have a location to meet there.
She settled into her tiny haven and was ready to consume the food Danny left for her there every day. She eventually stopped running as far or as quickly as she had in the past. After some time, she finally permitted him to watch her eat from a nearby.
Then, a few months later, something extraordinary occurred. Mom wants to have fun! She began to bow and dance from a safe distance, the first indication that he was getting through her steely exterior and into her soft heart, but she still kept him at a safe distance.
She finally began to physically acquaint herself with him and was always delighted to see him. She moved forward and gave him a quick sniff. Even though she wasn’t quite ready to trust him yet, she accepted the delectable goodies and savored the camaraderie of her new companion.
Danny never let Mama down as she waited for him in the same spot every day. As the two developed a friendship, Danny gently and methodically won her trust. He never forced it. Although she wasn’t prepared to accompany him, it was obvious that she loved him.
Danny learned the truth about Mama’s past three months after his first visit. She had been left at a petrol station months before, five miles away. She had been feeding puppies at the time, according to the images she had shown him.
Since then, Mama had been living alone and was abandoned when she was most vulnerable. It makes sense why she wasn’t a trusting person. Those who were supposed to love her forever had hurt her heart. But Danny persisted and engaged her in leash games to desensitize her. No matter how long it took, he wasn’t going to give up and was focused on saving her. He helped her get used to his touch before setting up a humane trap to finally use to capture her.
He patiently pushed week after week to bring the Mama home with him. It wasn’t simple, and many people certainly would have given up, but every day brought them a little bit closer together. The day eventually arrived after Mama grew accustomed to entering and exiting the trap. They had a strategy in place to finally capture her fifteen months after they left her behind. It marked the end of her alone wanderings through the fields and the start of the rest of her life.
She was taken from the fields to Danny’s home, where the process of earning her trust once more began. She gradually began to feel at home in her new house and eventually adapted to her new life.
