Since he was a puppy, Gilligan has been at the Bedford County Humane Society in Pennsylvania. He had a terrible start in life that left him with a lot of issues to overcome, so the shelter decided to put him to work as an office greeter, which he enjoys. “He’s a fantastic office greeting,” Joyce Ross, a Bedford County Humane Society staffer, told The Dodo. “Every time someone passes through the door, he informs us while patiently waiting for the visitor to bring him goodies or a new toy.” He’s made a lot of development.”

Someone at the shelter recently put Gilligan in his kennel but didn’t latch it properly as they were closing up for the night. He was able to wiggle the door open and set himself free after everyone had gone home for the night. He was alone in the shelter and had the freedom to do whatever he pleased, so he threw himself a party.

“He checked the building for a long time to see whether anyone was inside,” Ross added. “When he realized he was alone, he immediately went for the toys.” He took them one by one from the pile of Christmas donations we had just gotten and brought them into the hallway to play with them and rip the squeakers out.”

Gilligan let loose and dragged his new toys all over the place. His shambles took up numerous corridors and rooms. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime event. The next day, when everyone gathered at the shelter, there was no need to try to figure out who had made the mess. As he did a little happy dance, Gilligan was right there, extremely pleased with himself and eager to take control of the situation.
Ross added, “He had no guilt and was pleased to see a familiar face.” As everyone looked about at the shambles, they were relieved to find that Gilligan had kept his gang in check. He hadn’t gone for anything, not even the meal. He’d only been interested in the squeaky toys, and he made it clear to the other dogs at the shelter that they were now his.
“Everyone at the shelter thought it was funny because he wouldn’t destroy anything in the building except the dog toys,” Ross added. “First, we went through all of the toys to see if there were any survivors that could be repurposed. He didn’t bother with the ones that didn’t have a squeaker because that’s what he was looking for. The cleanup was rather simple once we collected some of the items that could be repurposed.”
Even though he threw a party without authorization, no one could be angry with Gilligan. He’d had a tough life and just wanted to live out his aspirations, and based on the mess, it appears he did just that.
