Wangwang, an eight-year-old retired police dog, wept with delight when she saw her handler for the first time since June 2019. Xichuan Police posted a video of their reunion on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, showing the dog racing up to her former handler and rolling around in delight for tummy rubs.
Wangwang appears to be crying at one point, and she isn’t the only one. ‘Wangwang’s hair is becoming white, but she is well-nourished, and she is gaining fat,’ said the caption on the video. According to the Daily Star, Wangwang operated as a sniffer dog for the Xichuan Police at security checkpoints in Henan Province, central China. She has found her forever home since retirement, although she was separated from her handler in the process.
Users on Douyin commented on how healthy they found the video. ‘The dog is welling up,’ one commenter wrote. Please treat her well because dogs are such wonderful companions!’ ‘You can sense how much Wangwang misses her handler,’ someone else said. When the dog welcomes you from behind, you can understand.’
In response to questions about why the handler couldn’t stay with the dog, Xichuan Police said it was due to time constraints. ‘Police dogs are normally properly fed at the training center, but our officers were unable to devote their time to play or exercise with retired dogs,’ it stated, adding that retired police canines would be ‘better cared for by a family rather than the training center.
Wangwang misses her handler, but I’m sure she’s having the time of her life with her new family.
