Star and Denver appear to be typical 3-month-old puppies at first glance. The two terrier-mix siblings like playing and exploring; they run around the room chasing toys and one another until they fall asleep in bed together.

The way these two play, though, has a very unique quality. Due to her brother’s tender care, Star, who is deaf and nearly completely blind, can experience life to the fullest. Denver serves as Star’s guide, making sure she is safe at all times.

According to Jackie Kelleher, social media manager at the Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC), “Denver will run over to Star when she seems disoriented and checks in with her.” They enjoy playing with each other, playing tag, using rope toys, and chewing on teddy animals.

Denver is constantly on the lookout for his sister, ensuring sure she is aware of his presence. Kelleher stated, “He pushes her to do this.” Star can scent him as well, and if she gets lost, she will circle the room until she finds him. While the puppies are now secure, if it weren’t for the compassion of strangers, things would have gone very differently.
Star and Denver, together with their mother and six siblings, had been abandoned in a remote area of Louisiana when a couple came discovered them. After the puppies stopped nursing, the couple took care of the small family and made arrangements for a rescue to take the litter in.

The eight puppies arrived at HWAC in early February after traveling nearly 2,000 miles to San Diego. All have since found their everlasting homes, except Star and Denver.
The rescue is currently looking for someone, ideally nearby, who can provide these puppies with the care and attention they require. As long as her brother is around to watch over her, Star values her independence and frequently appears unaware of her unique requirements.

She ‘maps’ out the environment around her when she moves to a new spot, Kelleher added, moving very slowly and putting one paw out warily in front of the other. Denver will remain watchful of her needs as long as they are near people.
The two tiny puppies are lifelong companions and are eager to share their love with the ideal family.
