Labrador retrievers are a popular family pet. They are well-known for their friendliness and ability to work well with children. However, in South Florida, a man named Alex Schulze has discovered a new way to enjoy having Labradors as pets, and it’s unlike anything else.

It’s no surprise that Labradors can swim very well. However, not many people are aware that these adorable puppies were created to aid fishermen who were sailing out to sea. So they’re capable of much more than just fetching and looking cute. That’s why Lila and Maverick, Alex’s two Labradors, are ideal for him.
Alex adores being on the sea, to the point where rescuing the ocean has become his life’s work. Devoted To The Ocean was co-founded by him. They offer beachwear and donate 20% of their proceeds to the conservation of endangered sea turtles.

The official mascots of this organization are Lila, a black Lab, and Maverick, a chocolate Lab. These two enjoy spending time on the boat with their father. Their training began with a water-based version of fetch. Alex would throw a toy in the water, which the puppies would retrieve.
Even for some humans, diving 15 feet below the surface of the ocean is a difficult task. Alex had noted how good the puppies were at retrieving their toy and that they might as well catch some meal while they were at it. Alex educated both of his pets, but Lila has proven to be his most devoted pupil. Lila could easily dive down to the water floor and capture live lobsters.

She understands how to hold her breath, dive down with her hind legs, and even spot lobsters on her own. Maverick is less skilled, but he’s improving. We can expect Maverick to be hauling a new catch for his father shortly, thanks to his sister showing him the ropes. Alex is thrilled that his pups are becoming internet celebrities because it will bring attention to Devoted To The Ocean, allowing them to save more sea turtles.
