The following story depicts how a couple used a tactic they learned while living in ‘Coyote Country’ to scare away a coyote and save their puppy. Dog owners who live in places where coyotes are common rapidly learn how to get away from them through careful actions and experience. Chico the Chihuahua is amazingly alive and well after escaping from a coyote’s clutches while being videotaped. The entire incident was captured on home security camera footage.

Kerry and Larry Ruiz live in Chatsworth, and around 11 a.m., a cocky adult coyote sauntered into their backyard. The coyote was poised to devour the hapless Chihuahua in a couple of seconds. “He stole Chico!” the owners said as they watched the surveillance video of their dog in a critical condition. Oh, my goodness! Chico has been caught by a coyote! Kerry caught a glimpse of him falling from the kitchen window.

Kerry screamed in terror in her bedroom, prompting her husband Larry and their son to race across the yard, but the coyote had already hopped over the brick wall into a neighbor’s yard, and it was only then that Kerry remembered she had a portable air horn. Larry began strewing them throughout the house a few years ago. “One for each door,” says the author.
Larry remarked. “Because we know how close we are.” We’re well aware that this is coyote country.” The couple was successful in scaring the coyote away. The coyote, paralyzed by the sound, decided to abandon Chico and flee. Only minor stab wounds and broken ribs were sustained by the puppy. The dog recovered well in a few weeks after a visit to the vet and wearing an inconvenient plastic cone on his head. Here’s a lesson for all pet owners, according to Ruiz.

This is a straightforward procedure. “Never leave an animal alone,” Kerry advised. Larry explains, “Coyotes hunt 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” They don’t hold the coyotes responsible. They said they were just hungry wild creatures. However, pet owners are advised to exercise caution.
