Even though sloths dislike being touched and see even the most enthusiastic hug as threatening, they can form unusual friendships with humans and other creatures they would otherwise ignore.
Dogs are one of the creatures that pose a hazard to sloths.
Powerlines are another hazard to sloth populations in Central and South America. In Venezuela, where celebrity sloth Chuwie resides, circumstances aren’t much better.
A seriously damaged sloth was discovered in Caracas about two years ago. His injuries appeared to be tough to heal after he was electrocuted by a powerline.
The individuals who discovered him were adamant about saving the wild animal and refused to give up.
So they solicited the support of veterinarians and experts from all across South America to ensure Chuwie’s survival.
Despite losing all of his claws in his hind legs and left hand, the sloth survived against all odds. The veterinarians did a wonderful job, and Chuwie was able to reclaim his life.
For him, though, nothing was the same as before. Even though he lost his claws, which makes life more difficult in some aspects, he was fortunate enough to make a new best buddy.
From the beginning, Seven, the family’s pet dog, formed a strong bond with Chuwie. Chuwie’s rescuer, on the other hand, knew that if the dog approached him, the sloth would feel threatened.
So she waited till he had fully recovered before bringing Seven over.
Seven began approaching Chuwie once he had fully recovered. The sloth gradually grew accustomed to Seven’s proximity, and he even began to like her.
Since then, the two unexpected friends have spent time together, and Chuwie seems to enjoy Seven’s company.
The dog even tries to establish common ground with the sloth, such as leaf-munching. When they’re together, they’re even cuter. They’ve developed a close bond over time, and it’s obvious.
“Seven’s perseverance paid off handsomely,” the company’s owners claim. “With Seven by his side, Chuwie is now more relaxed and content. Every minute, Seven loves.”
